Apple unveils its newest creation:

The Vision Pro

Apple announced the Vision Pro at the 2023 Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, and with it came many mixed reviews.

The Vision Pro is Apple’s first spatial operating system. It is essentially a riff on a VR headset, but Apple refers to it more as a computer, claiming that the Vision Pro is the start of the spatial computing era. It brings about a mix of VR and AR to the real world and is said to blend real and digital spaces seamlessly. It is expected to come out sometime early next year.

With its announcement and initial tests, many of the demo participants are coming out with mixed feelings. It’s an interesting product signaling a new era, but why? Even the internet has taken to clowning on the headset.

The biggest drawback to the headset that everyone is talking about is the cost. At a whopping $3,499, the Vision Pro comes at a very steep price, and that’s something not a lot of people can justify spending. Plus, there are no outstanding apps designed just for it that make it worth this cost.

On top of that, the headset comes with an external battery pack that it must be plugged into. As it stands now, this battery pack only lasts for 2 hours which is extremely short compared to other devices. Even though the lack of a built-in battery makes it lighter overall, it may not be worth it since the charge is so short.

While not the worst thing, many people are also mocking EyeSight, a feature that displays your eyes on the headset’s external display. It’s meant to keep one connected to those around them, but everyone agrees that it looks extremely creepy and a little uncanny.

There are some promising features that other headsets don’t offer. Unlike most VR gear, the Vision Pro offers a controller-free experience with the use of very accurate hand tracking. On top of that, the eye tracking is said to be much more accurate. They also boast about the screens inside the goggles having more pixels than a 4K TV with their 23 million pixel micro-OLED displays.

While it’s too early for any full in-depth reviews, most of the initial first looks of the Vision Pro are largely similar- it’s an impressive piece of tech with a giant price tag and no justification for that price. Despite its remarkable features, there’s no real reason for its existence yet, and with an exorbitantly high price tag, most people won’t be able to afford it anyway. For now, the commotion surrounding it is less about hype and more about all the different ways people can make fun of it.
