The Brothers Sun a comedy action show on Netflix that deals with form of a family aspect. The netflix series stars actress Michelle Yeoh from critically acclaimed Everthing, Everywhere All at Once also up incoming actors Justin Chein and Sam Song Li.
The Sun Family
Charles “Chairleg” Sun

Charles played by Justin Chein is the first of the Sun family that we meet, when his high rise apartment is attacked by a rival triad family. He manages to beat his attackers and kill them, his father and fellow Sun Triad members come in and discuss the situation that had just occurred. Little did any of the characters know this was all a ploy from the rival family to lure the Charles’ father out of hiding to assasinate him. Charles is forced to reunite with the rest of his family and protect them from the incoming dangers.
Bruce Sun

Bruce played by Sam Song Li, is the younger brother of Charles who grows up away from the Triad lifestyle with his Mom. Bruce is introduced as a smart student in college. He struggles to pay for his tuition even though his mom gives him money to pay for school. Bruce rather spend his money paying for what he calls “The Best Improv Class in LA”. Bruce is unaware of the real truth of his family. His mother telling him that his father is a gambler and his brother in Antartica. Bruce will be forced to adapt and change as the story progresses so his family can be safe.
Eileen “Mama” Sun

Eileen “Mama” Sun portrayed by Michelle Yeoh, is the mother of Bruce and Charles Sun. She is initially shown as a caring mom to Bruce who takes care of him and only wants the best for him and for him to have a normal life. But, when Charles reunites with her it shows her triad side. Still wanting Bruce to have a normal life she tries to convince Charles, to let Bruce to be himself.

The Brothers Sun deals with a very important concept, which is to do what you are supposed to do to protect and help your family or do what you want to do. Especially for many immigrant kids growing up, parents create a set path that they want their child to follow. This is seen when parents what their kids to be a doctor, pharmacist, engineer or any other high paying stem career. But the kids want to be other things like an actor, influencer or non typical careers.
The show also represents the sacrifices that many immigrant parents have to make when they come to America. They have to give up their hopes and dreams that they had growing up to provide for their children so they can have a good life. This is an example of the concept brought up before of doing what you are supposed to do for your family and not doing what you want to do because you can.
Conclusion
The Brothers Sun is an amazing show that deals with a lot of amazing concepts for those that grew up with immigrant parents. It’s also very funny and entertaining to watch. Michelle Yeoh does an amazing job like she always does. Justin Chein does very well in his role as Charles as well showing the conflict he has and Sam Song Li had many emotional and very relateable moments as Bruce. This is new netlfix show is a must watch for those who want a funny action comedy with some serious messages.
